PLEASE HELP: Tell UNM to Protect Women’s Volleyball Team from Playing Against Male Players

Writer's picture: Sarah SmithSarah Smith

Dear New Mexicans,

Will you help protect women athletes in NM?

On October 17th, the University of NM Women’s Volleyball Team is scheduled to play against San Jose State University (SJSU). This is a problem because there is a biological male on the SJSU team. It is not fair or safe for women to play against men in volleyball!

For instance, high schooler Payton McNabb in North Carolina suffered severe head and neck injuries after a transgender athlete spiked a volleyball into her face.  Payton has suffered long-term effects from her injuries, including partial paralysis, impaired vision, learning disabilities, constant headaches, and depression.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Will you please email and/or call UNM Athletics and Volleyball Coaches to urge them to protect their players by refusing to play against SJSU?

POTENTIAL TALKING POINTS

Please do NOT copy-paste these verbatim. Your communications will be most effective if you add in your own words as well. Please be respectful to make the most positive impact.

  • Please protect your women’s team by refusing to play against SJSU.

  • It is not safe or fair for women to have to play sports against biological men.

  • Five other university teams have already refused to play against SJSU, including Southern Utah, Boise State, Utah State, University of Wyoming, and University of Nevada.

  • Girls and women can be severely injured when they are forced to play sports against males. For instance, high schooler Payton McNabb in North Carolina suffered severe head and neck injuries after a transgender athlete spiked a volleyball into her face. Payton has suffered long-term effects from her injuries, including partial paralysis, impaired vision, learning disabilities, constant headaches, and depression. https://wlos.com/news/local/volleyball-player-injured-after-transgender-opponent-spiked-ball-at-her-speaks-out

  • Males are physiologically stronger and more powerful than females, and it is unfair for women and girls to EVER have to compete against males. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7930971/
